Head of HR

Merseyside (On-site)
£80,000 - £100,000

The Opportunity

We're partnering with a well-established, values-driven business to appoint a Head of HR who will play a pivotal role in shaping the next phase of growth.

This is not a purely strategic role. We're looking for someone who is genuinely hands-on, comfortable operating at both strategic and operational level, and who thrives in an operational SME environment where relationships, trust and visibility matter.

You'll have the autonomy to make a real impact while being fully embedded in the day-to-day operations of the business.

The Role

As Head of HR, you will lead the people function end-to-end, taking ownership of both strategy and delivery.

Working closely with senior leadership, you will balance long-term planning with a strong presence on the ground-supporting managers, resolving issues, and driving consistency across the business.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys being visible, approachable and proactive, rather than sitting at arm's length.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and deliver a practical, business-focused HR strategy
  • Lead and develop a small HR team, setting clear direction and standards
  • Ensure HR policies, procedures and processes are robust, compliant and fit-for-purpose
  • Act as a hands-on partner to managers, supporting all aspects of HR operations
  • Own and manage employee relations cases, providing clear, pragmatic guidance
  • Drive a positive, engaged and high-performing culture aligned to company values
  • Support organisational change, growth and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Oversee recruitment, retention and succession planning activity
  • Champion learning, development and capability building across the organisation
  • Manage reward, benefits and performance frameworks
  • Provide insight through HR metrics to support business decision-making

What We're Looking For

You'll be a credible, down-to-earth HR leader who is equally comfortable in the boardroom and on the shop floor.

Experience & Style

  • Proven experience as a Head of HR or senior HR Leader
  • Strong background in operational, hands-on HR delivery
  • Experience working within SME or family-run environments (or similar cultures)
  • Strong track record of integrating acquired businesses, aligning structures, culture and terms & conditions to create a unified, high-performing organisation
  • Demonstrable experience managing change and driving cultural improvements
  • Confident handling complex employee relations matters

Personal Attributes

  • Approachable, visible and relationship-focused
  • Pragmatic, solutions-driven and commercially aware
  • Resilient and comfortable working at pace
  • Strong influencer with the ability to build trust quickly
  • Naturally collaborative, with a "roll your sleeves up" mindset

Qualifications

  • CIPD qualified (or equivalent)

Why This Role?

  • Join a stable, growing business with strong values
  • Genuine opportunity to shape culture and influence direction
  • High level of autonomy and visibility
  • Be part of a collaborative, family-oriented environment where people come first
